Dexter is a census-designated place (CDP) in the town of Dexter in Penobscot County, Maine, United States. The population was 2,201 at the 2000 census.

Geography

Dexter is located at (45.020594, -69.292374).[1]

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 5.3 square miles (13.8 km²), of which, 4.8 square miles (12.3 km²) of it is land and 0.6 square miles (1.5 km²) of it (10.86%) is water.

Demographics

As of the census[2] of 2000, there were 2,201 people, 968 households, and 623 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 462.3 people per square mile (178.5/km²). There were 1,151 housing units at an average density of 241.8/sq mi (93.4/km²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 98.23% White, 0.55% Black or African American, 0.09% Native American, 0.18% Asian, and 0.95% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.77% of the population.

There were 968 households out of which 26.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 11.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.6% were non-families. 31.3% of all households were made up of individuals and 16.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.25 and the average family size was 2.76.

In the CDP the population was spread out with 23.1% under the age of 18, 7.7% from 18 to 24, 24.4% from 25 to 44, 26.3% from 45 to 64, and 18.5% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 41 years. For every 100 females there were 88.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 83.2 males.

The median income for a household in the CDP was $23,779, and the median income for a family was $31,019. Males had a median income of $27,031 versus $17,670 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $13,397. About 15.6% of families and 20.3% of the population were below the poverty line, including 30.7% of those under age 18 and 12.4% of those age 65 or over.
